"The Redback"
A brooch and pendant designed by de SHERVIN, for both men and women.
This piece took three months to complete — not for its size, but for the precision it demanded. 113 pieces of gem-quality natural pigeon blood ruby, were hand-selected and matched stone by stone for consistency of color and tone, then custom-cut to fit the exact curvature of the Redback's body. No two stones are alike, yet each had to be cut to sit seamlessly against the next.
The stones were then invisibly set by de SHERVIN's atelier — a technique that hides every metal setting beneath the surface, so the rubies appear to merge into one continuous field of color rather than a collection of individual gems. It is widely regarded as one of the most technically demanding setting methods in fine jewelry: a single misjudged cut can throw off the fit of an entire row, and there is little room to correct course once a stone is set. Achieving this on a sculptural, three-dimensional form — across eight curved legs and a rounded body — multiplied that difficulty considerably.
Natural diamond-cut rubies, paired with diamind cut black diamonds along the legs, bring out the fine articulation and detail of the Redback's form. Set in 18k gold with a blackened PVD.
A concealed pendant loop allows the Redback to be worn as a brooch by day or suspended as a pendant by evening.
The result is a one-of-a-kind work — not just to be worn, but to be held, studied, and appreciated for the craftsmanship within it. It stands as a clear expression of de SHERVIN's identity: colored gemstones pushed to their technical limit, in service of pieces meant to be lived with, not just looked at.
