DE SHERVIN's Ladybird
A symbol of fortune, set in gold and gemstone
Across cultures and centuries, the ladybird has carried a singular reputation: a small creature that brings good fortune to whoever it visits. Farmers protected them, children chased them, and grandmothers everywhere agreed - if one lands on you, make a wish.
I had wanted to design a ladybird for years. It struck me as strange that, despite its universal charm, this little insect rarely appears in fine jewellery the way other motifs do. So I set out to give it the treatment it deserved - not a literal copy of nature, but a jewelled interpretation built entirely from precious stone and gold, every detail considered to match DE SHERVIN'S standard of work.
The body is paved by hand in pigeon blood rubies, set so closely together that the metal beneath all but disappears beneath the red. Cornflower blue sapphires form the creature's spots and head, each one chosen for that pure, saturated blue that gemstone hunters spend years searching for. A small cluster of natural diamonds, cut to D-F color and VVS-VS clarity, brings light to the face
- a quiet flash of brilliance against all that color.
Every stone sits in a hand-carved pavé setting, and every prong holding them was shaped and set by hand, one at a time, under magnification. The design alone took three months to resolve before a single stone was cut for it; the making took seven weeks more.
Worn as a brooch or pendant, DE SHERVIN's Ladybird sits with quiet presence - a small piece of folklore, rendered in gold and gemstone, meant to bring whoever wears it a little of that old, simple luck.
